Microsoft hasannounced that two new Xbox 360 bundles are headed to Japan. The first is a Star Ocean 4 bundle which will be available February 19 and will include an Xbox 360 Arcade unit with 256MB of internal memory, a faceplate and a soundtrack CD for ¥24,800 ($263). The second is a Resident Evil 5 bundle which will include a 60GB Xbox 360 Pro console, the Resident Evil 5 Deluxe Edition and a headset. The Deluxe Edition -- which appears to be different from the Limited Edition announced last month -- comes in a collector's tin case and includes a soundtrack CD. The Resident Evil 5 bundle is set to arrive in Japan on March 5 and will sell for ¥34,800 ($370).

Resident Evil 5 is going to look fantastic no matter where you play it but when the two console demos are put head-to-head, which one do you think has the graphical edge? You guessed it, it's the Xbox 360.
Dot50Cal over at The-Horror.com put together a fantastic gallery of screen shots from both versions of the demo. While both look great, Dot50Cal notes that the Xbox 360 version appears to be a few builds ahead of the PS3; shadows and sharpness appear to be the major difference. But don't go too crazy X-heads, these comparisons are based on a demo and not the final game and some only show very small differences. Check out Dot50Cal's images for a closer look.

On March 13, 2009, Resident Evil 5 runs into stores with modern zombie swiftness. Being that the latest installment is the first time the franchise has ever hit the Xbox platform, X-heads are more than a little excited. Need a primer for some of the Resident Evil story? GameTrailers has released the Survivor Retrospective, a spoiler-rich look back at the adventures of fan-favorite characters Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield.
Hot on the heels of the recent Resident Evil 5 press event -- that our jerk friends at Joystiq got to attend -- Capcom has seen fit to release some new gameplay footage. We've got two brand newvideos (find them after the break), both of them chockful of not-zombie slaying goodness. Explosions, machine guns, shotguns, incendiary grenades, chainsaws and freaky weird parasite behavior: these videos have got it all. Oh, and just so we're clear that these aren't technically zombies, you can learn why headshots aren't always the best idea at about 1:13 in the second video.
So, how would you all like to hear about some new Resident Evil 5 levels? Joystiq recently got the chance to check out not one, but two new Resident Evil 5 levels, including a boss! Us, well, we got to play the demo at least, but don't think for one second that that's enough to stave off our jealousy. Oh, no. Just to give you an idea of what's in store when you inevitably click the source link below, here's a choice quote we've pulled from the piece: "a boss fight against a giant, flying bat/hornet/cow creature."
Yeah, Joystiq better watch its back. That's all we're saying.
Fresh from the printer and ready to make its worldwide debut is new Resident Evil 5 box art that comes complete with an eerie Kijuju feel, a touch of Africa and a dash of "you got my back, I got yours." We think the RE5 box art can be best described by the ever eloquent Capcom's PR folks. Ahem ...
"The new box art imagery gives players a sneak peak into the nightmarish world of Resident Evil 5 as the art shows off the most thrilling new features in the game including the action-packed new 2-player co-op, the setting of Kijuju where light and darkness bring new horror and mysterious scribbling that represent a fear that no fan will forget...."
For those who failed at an illegal attempt (by Xbox Live standards) to snag the recently released Resident Evil 5 demo from the Japanese Live Marketplace, know that your RE5 demo will be releasing locally early next year. MTV Multiplayer was informed that the currently Japanese exclusive RE5 demo will release globally via Live in what we're guessing to be its current form. So, you can either be patient or use other means to get non-Xbox Live functioning demo access.
No, it's not zombies playing ping pong. It's Resident Evil 5's Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar playing ping pong with a zombie. No, it's not an unbalanced two-on-one match. The zombie is the ball, get it? Sure, physical combat may not be the most practical way to deal with zombies, but it certainly is one of the most entertaining. We have to admit though, watching Chris punch a zombie in the face -- causing its head to explode -- seems pretty silly. At least, that's what we thought before Sheva did a freaking Frankensteiner. Ridiculous (but still awesome, somehow).
Update: Just to be clear, we're not 100% certain that Japanese gamers have access to Live co-op and are under the assumption that the Live ban was directed at regions that do not officially have access to the demo.
Last week, Capcom released a meaty Resident Evil 5 co-op demo to the Live Marketplace. All would've been peaches and cream except for the fact that the demo was only released to the Japanese Marketplace. But non-Japanese gamers soon found a few ways to snag the demo and all was right with the world. That is, until now, because Microsoft won't let non-Japanese gamers play RE5 co-op over Live.
We just discovered that MS might be using some sort of Xbox 360 IP identification to disconnect non-Japanese gamers from Xbox Live as soon as the Resident Evil 5 demo is loaded. That means that no matter how you "illegally" obtained the demo (Japanese accounts or torrent downloads), if you don't live in Japan, you'll be booted off Live. While the demo is still playable offline, your dreams of RE5 Live co-op have been infected with an incurable virus.
Capcom's official Resident Evil 5 website has spawned a new viral campaign that's chock full of mystery, candle light confusion, something about someone (or something) in Kijuju and RE5unlockables. Head scratching confused? Let us explain.
What we know is that this viral campaign's mission is to get the RE5 community to come together to unlock exclusive RE5 assets including screenshots and videos which will ultimately flesh out some of the story. You can start the viral journey by waving the candle around until you spot the number "1". Then, simply click to enjoy video goodness. Next (here's the community part) you're supposed to spread the RE5 viral word by sending your friends to the website which will unlock new content and (potentially) gain you website fame. The first goal is to get 100,000 video views, which should unlock the next viral task. Oh, and just in case you weren't aware, Kijuju is the area RE5 takes place in.
Update: [From the editor] Ahem, it turns out you can get your hands on the demo outside of Japan. It just takes a little ingenuity. And the right information.
We've tried creating new accounts, we've tried using 48 hour trial cards, we've even tried buying subscriptions with our credit cards. We've tried it all and unfortunately we're no closer to playing Resident Evil 5. Yes, Famitsu was right and Major Nelson confirms, a demo for the highly anticipated survival horror game Resident Evil 5 (or BioHazard 5 as it's called in Japan) is available for Xbox Live Gold members on the Japanese marketplace and no amount of scamming the system appears to work. Unfortunately, updates regarding a North American release of the demo are unavailable and it's unclear if the Japanese demo will eventually be made available to Silver users. Or people trying to scam the system. Resident Evil 5 is scheduled to release on March 13, 2009. Patience, kids. It's almost here.
Eurogamer is reporting that Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi has hinted that a RE5 demo announcement will be coming soon. Joy!
"We'll be making an announcement about that relatively soon," said Takeuchi when asked about the possibility of a RE5 demo being released. And we don't think we have to tell you that we'd be all for a RE5 demo prior to launch. You know, because pre release demos make us happy. Very, very happy.
They say, "Time heals all wounds." Unless those wounds are a zombie bite, in which case you are pretty much done-zos. Capcom's Resident Evil 5 is slowing inching toward a release and throngs of excited fans cannot wait. How has the series sustained itself for so many years? Evolving both graphically and technically, Resident Evil has set the standard for reinventing itself countless times while telling a long, sweeping story that has spanned the globe. From its humble beginings of scaring us with pixelated slow-walkers to the HD-era of online co-op zombie action. Resident Evil 5 looks better than ever and on March 13, 2009, we'll all find out if it will be worth the wait.
Coming straight from Microsoft's Tokyo Game Show press conference is a brand new Resident Evil 5 trailer full of cooperative action, chainsaws and enough scary sh*t to make you jump out of your office chair. The trailer also gives us the first glimpse of Wesker and his evil greased back hair. How we hate greasy hair. Watch the trailer, get excited and ... well, SCREAM!
We all know gamers don't like when classic mechanics change but we're okay with letting this one die. According to 1UP, Resident Evil 5 has done away with the ancient mechanic of saving the game via in-game typewriter.
Fans of the series will recognize the mechanic as an idea that changed executions throughout the life of the franchise but was always the core idea behind saving. Now, the entire concept has been removed for a more simple, dare we say Western, approach.
"I really like typewriters; they're really typical of the Resident Evil series," Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi told EGM in the November issue. "But this time, the save system will be a combination of checkpoints and chapters." What's next for classic game mechanics? Regenerative health and no more health packs in Halo?! Oh, wait ...
Resident Evil 5 releases on March 13, 2009 for the Xbox 360.
